United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in confronting terrorism in Nigeria, pledging continued American support in the fight against violent extremism.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump applauded Tinubu’s resolve to address security challenges, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities, noting that the United States stands firmly with Nigeria in efforts to defeat terrorist groups and strengthen national stability.
Trump said both nations share a common goal of combating terrorism, highlighting the importance of the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, which provides a structured framework for joint security efforts.
The partnership has deepened through a Joint Working Group co-led by both countries’ National Security Advisers, focusing on intelligence sharing, training, and coordinated military operations.
A key outcome of the collaboration was the May 16 operation in the Lake Chad region, where joint efforts led to the elimination of ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his commanders.
Trump also revealed that US Special Operations Forces have been deployed to support and train Nigerian troops, enhancing their capacity to respond to security threats and protect citizens.
The growing cooperation was further reinforced last week during a visit to Abuja by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, who reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to expanding security and strategic ties with Nigeria.
The State House said the strengthened relationship reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to tackle regional instability and promote long-term peace and prosperity.
