Nasir El-Rufai

A legal dispute is brewing between the family of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), following allegations of defamation arising from a recent official statement by the anti-graft agency.

It was gathered that Aichatou El-Rufai has threatened legal action against the ICPC over comments contained in a press release issued on May 18, 2026, which she claims were damaging to her reputation and that of her family.

Sources familiar with the matter said the disputed statement by the ICPC reportedly contained references that the former governor’s wife considers “misleading and defamatory,” prompting consultations with her legal team on possible court action.

The development marks a fresh escalation in tensions between the El-Rufai family and the anti-corruption agency, with indications that formal notices may soon be served if the issue is not resolved through clarification or retraction.

Although details of the ICPC statement remain the subject of public debate, the agency has not yet issued an official response to the threat of litigation at the time of filing this report.

Legal experts say the case, if filed, could test the boundaries of public communication by anti-graft institutions and the rights of individuals to seek redress over reputational harm arising from official publications.

The ICPC is one of Nigeria’s key anti-corruption bodies mandated to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences across public institutions.

The matter is expected to draw attention in the coming days as both parties consider their next steps amid growing public interest in the controversy.
