FG Considers Tough Diplomatic Measures Over Xenophobic Attacks

The Federal Government has said it is considering stronger diplomatic measures following reports of renewed xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa, including Nigerians.

Government officials disclosed that consultations are ongoing to determine the most appropriate response while ensuring the safety and welfare of affected citizens. Authorities have also begun providing assistance to Nigerians who wish to return home amid concerns over their security.

Officials expressed concern over recurring incidents targeting foreign nationals and stressed the need for stronger protections for African migrants living and working in South Africa. They noted that such attacks undermine regional cooperation and the principles of African unity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria remains in contact with South African authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that affected citizens receive adequate protection and support.

“We are closely monitoring developments and exploring all diplomatic options available to protect Nigerians and safeguard their interests,” a government official said.

The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive relations with South Africa while insisting that the safety of Nigerian citizens remains a priority.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have urged both governments to intensify efforts aimed at preventing further violence. They called for public awareness campaigns and stronger law enforcement measures to address tensions that often fuel xenophobic attacks.

Several Nigerians residing in South Africa have reportedly expressed concerns about their safety, prompting authorities to facilitate voluntary return arrangements for those who choose to come back home.

Analysts warn that repeated incidents of xenophobia could strain relations between the two countries if not addressed effectively. They argue that stronger diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation are necessary to prevent future occurrences.

The Nigerian government emphasized that it would continue working with international partners and regional bodies to promote peaceful coexistence and respect for human rights.

Officials also encouraged Nigerians living abroad to remain vigilant and report threats to relevant authorities. They assured citizens that government agencies would continue to provide consular support and assistance where necessary.
