Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office, saying he would back the president in the 2027 general election because of his confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and vision for Nigeria.

Udom made the declaration during a public engagement in Akwa Ibom, where he described Tinubu as a leader with the capacity to steer the country through its ongoing economic and structural reforms. According to the former governor, national interest should take precedence over partisan considerations, stressing that continuity in governance would help consolidate ongoing reforms.

The former governor, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said his decision was informed by what he described as the president’s commitment to repositioning the economy and addressing longstanding national challenges.

Udom noted that while political affiliations remain important, Nigeria’s development should remain the overriding priority. He urged political leaders across party lines to support policies capable of improving the lives of Nigerians rather than focusing solely on electoral competition.

His endorsement comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with several political figures making their positions known as consultations intensify nationwide.

Political observers believe Udom’s remarks could further reshape political calculations in Akwa Ibom and the South-South, where parties are already positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.

Although the PDP remains the main opposition party, recent endorsements of Tinubu by influential political figures have fueled discussions about possible alliances ahead of the polls.

The presidency has continued to defend its economic reforms, insisting that current policies are laying the foundation for long-term growth despite short-term economic challenges.

With preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gathering momentum, Udom’s declaration is expected to generate debate within both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition, particularly in Akwa Ibom, where he remains an influential political figure.
