President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a 50 per cent fare reduction on all federal rail services nationwide ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, in a move aimed at easing travel costs for millions of Nigerians.
The directive, announced on Tuesday, will be implemented through the Nigerian Railway Corporation, covering major intercity routes including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, and Warri-Itakpe corridors. The discounted fares are expected to run throughout the festive period to support increased passenger movement.
Officials said the initiative is part of the administration’s broader social intervention measures designed to cushion the impact of rising living costs, particularly during religious festivities. The government noted that transportation expenses often surge during peak travel periods, placing additional financial strain on citizens.

According to transport authorities, adequate arrangements have been made to handle the anticipated surge in passengers. Additional trips and enhanced security presence at train stations are expected to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety.
Passengers across major stations welcomed the development, describing it as timely relief. Many commuters noted that rail transport has become increasingly vital due to rising fuel prices and road transport costs.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation also confirmed that monitoring teams will be deployed to ensure compliance with the directive and prevent exploitation by ticket racketeers.
Industry observers say the move could further boost confidence in rail transport as a reliable and affordable alternative for long-distance travel in Nigeria.
