Presidential spokesman Sunday Dare has described President Bola Tinubu’s local government reform agenda as a viable template for grassroots development and national progress.
Dare made the assertion in Abuja while addressing stakeholders on the administration’s efforts to strengthen governance at the local government level. He said the reforms are designed to promote transparency, accountability and efficient service delivery across Nigeria’s 774 local councils.
According to him, empowering local governments is critical to addressing developmental challenges, particularly in rural areas where access to basic infrastructure and services remains limited. He noted that Tinubu’s approach seeks to ensure that funds allocated to local councils are utilised effectively for the benefit of citizens.
“The President believes that real development must start from the grassroots. Strengthening local governments is key to achieving that goal,” Dare said.
He explained that the reforms include measures to improve financial autonomy, enhance oversight mechanisms and build institutional capacity at the local level. These steps, he added, will help curb mismanagement and ensure that resources reach intended projects.
Dare also highlighted the role of technology in monitoring local government activities, noting that digital tools are being introduced to track spending and project implementation. He said this would improve transparency and reduce corruption.
Stakeholders at the event commended the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary for accelerating development. They urged the federal government to sustain the reforms and ensure effective collaboration with state governments.
Policy experts say local government reform has long been a contentious issue in Nigeria, with concerns over autonomy and accountability. They argue that successful implementation will depend on political will and consistent enforcement of regulations.
Dare reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring that the reforms translate into tangible benefits for citizens, including improved healthcare, education and infrastructure.
He added that the government is determined to create a system where local councils serve as engines of development, contributing meaningfully to national growth.
