Thousands of market women in Upogoro have expressed support for President Bola Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo following an empowerment programme organised by Dr. Excel Onuche.
The initiative provided assistance to beneficiaries while also creating an avenue for political engagement and mobilisation around the Tinubu administration and the leadership of Governor Ododo.
The gathering brought together women from the community, with beneficiaries receiving support intended to improve their economic activities and strengthen their capacity to contribute to household and community livelihoods.

The organisers used the programme to highlight the importance of supporting government policies and programmes targeted at improving the economic position of women and other vulnerable groups.
Women constitute a significant component of grassroots political mobilisation in many parts of Nigeria, making their support strategically important to political parties and government officials ahead of future elections.
The endorsement of Tinubu and Ododo by the women therefore carries political significance as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum.
Supporters of the administration have continued to emphasise its economic and social intervention programmes, while opponents have raised concerns about the impact of current economic conditions on households and businesses.
The empowerment initiative provides a grassroots platform through which beneficiaries can receive direct assistance while also engaging with political messages about government performance.
Dr. Onuche’s role in the programme further places the initiative within the broader effort to strengthen community-level support for the administration and its political allies.
The event also underscores the importance of grassroots structures in translating political support into organised participation ahead of elections.
For many market women, access to financial assistance, business support and other empowerment opportunities remains an important consideration in assessing government programmes.
The organisers said the support for Tinubu and Ododo reflected confidence among the beneficiaries and participants in their leadership.
However, sustaining such support beyond individual empowerment programmes will depend largely on the administration’s ability to continue delivering policies and interventions that directly affect the livelihoods of citizens.
With the 2027 elections approaching, political actors are increasingly turning their attention to communities, market associations, women’s groups and other grassroots organisations.
The Upogoro gathering is therefore another indication that political mobilisation is beginning to move beyond party meetings into community-based engagements, where voter sentiment and support are built ahead of the electoral contest.
