Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to vote for competence, integrity and proven leadership in the 2027 general elections, warning against allowing ethnicity and other sentiments to determine their political choices.

Obi made the call on Thursday at an NDC town hall meeting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where he challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for his administration’s achievements and the loans obtained under his leadership.

The former Anambra State governor said Nigerians should evaluate political candidates based on their records, policy proposals and capacity to address the country’s economic and security challenges rather than their ethnic or regional backgrounds.

He questioned the direction of the Tinubu administration, insisting that public officials must demonstrate how government borrowing translates into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.

Obi maintained that leadership should be measured by its impact on ordinary Nigerians, particularly in areas such as education, healthcare, food security, employment and public safety.

The NDC candidate pledged that, if elected president, his administration would prioritise national unity, strengthen security, improve access to quality education and healthcare, and intensify the fight against corruption.

He also promised to increase domestic food production and introduce measures to address the growing challenges facing Nigerian households.

Education featured prominently in his proposed agenda, with Obi pledging to reduce the number of out-of-school children through policies aimed at improving access to learning and strengthening the education system.

Nigeria continues to face significant challenges in providing adequate educational opportunities for children, particularly in communities affected by poverty, insecurity and inadequate infrastructure.

Obi’s proposed approach places human capital development and investment in essential public services at the centre of his campaign message.

On security, he emphasised the need for a more effective response to threats affecting communities and economic activities across the country. He also identified national unity as a priority, arguing that Nigeria’s diversity should not prevent citizens from supporting leaders capable of delivering results.

His criticism of the Federal Government’s borrowing strategy adds to the debate over public debt, infrastructure spending and the economic impact of the administration’s reforms.

The 2027 presidential election is expected to generate intense competition as political parties seek to convince voters that their candidates can address the country’s persistent economic and social challenges.

Obi urged Nigerians to look beyond political affiliations and sentiments when making their choices, presenting competence, accountability and service delivery as the standards voters should demand from those seeking public office.

His pledges will face scrutiny as the campaign season progresses, particularly over how the proposed priorities would be financed, implemented and measured if he secures the presidency.
