The Tijaniyya community has expressed grief over the death of prominent Bauchi Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, while urging Nigerians to preserve the values of unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence associated with his teachings.

The late cleric, a renowned leader of the Tijaniyya Muslim Brotherhood, died at the age of 101 and was widely recognised for his scholarship, religious teaching and influence across Nigeria and West Africa.

The Tijaniyya Supreme Council, in mourning the revered scholar, extended condolences to his family, followers and the wider Muslim community, describing his death as a significant loss to the religious community.

The council also reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu and urged Nigerians to remain committed to national unity and peaceful coexistence despite religious, ethnic and political differences.

The group said the late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s legacy should serve as a reminder of the importance of tolerance and responsible religious leadership at a time when divisions continue to pose challenges to national cohesion.

The scholar spent decades teaching Islamic jurisprudence, mentoring students and promoting Islamic knowledge through numerous learning centres.

His death attracted tributes from political, religious and traditional leaders, including President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other prominent Nigerians.

Tinubu described the late cleric as a teacher, father and voice of moderation, recalling his spiritual guidance and support. The President urged his followers to honour his memory by promoting peaceful coexistence, kindness and service to humanity.

Former Vice President Atiku also described the cleric as a strong advocate of unity and religious harmony, saying his voice had been important in addressing religious divisions.

The Tijaniyya council said the best way to preserve the late scholar’s legacy was for his followers and Nigerians generally to promote peace and avoid actions capable of deepening religious or ethnic tensions.

It urged citizens to support efforts aimed at strengthening national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The council’s position comes amid continued calls from religious and community leaders for Nigerians to place national interest above sectional considerations.

It said the country needed greater tolerance, mutual respect and responsible leadership to overcome its challenges and build a more peaceful society.
