President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court to vacate an order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, saying the action could undermine public confidence in the credibility of the forthcoming governorship election.

The President, in a statement on Thursday, said although he respects the independence of anti-corruption agencies and had no prior knowledge of the EFCC’s action, he considered the timing of the court order inappropriate because Osun State is only days away from its governorship poll.

The EFCC had secured a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the state’s accounts as part of an investigation. However, Tinubu said every action taken by a federal institution is ultimately associated with the Presidency, making it necessary for him to intervene in the interest of the nation’s democratic process.

“I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC’s exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency’s action,” the President said.

Tinubu reiterated that since assuming office, he has consistently allowed anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to operate independently, without political interference or executive directives.

According to him, strengthening democratic institutions requires allowing agencies to carry out their statutory responsibilities professionally, within the confines of the law and without fear or favour.

The President explained that he had deliberately refrained from interfering in the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative agencies because they were established by law with clearly defined powers and responsibilities.

Despite this longstanding policy, Tinubu said the proximity of the Osun governorship election made the matter exceptional, stressing that no action by any federal institution should create the perception that the Federal Government is attempting to influence the outcome of the poll.

He noted that although he had yet to receive a full briefing on the facts that prompted the EFCC to seek the freezing order, the overriding public interest demanded immediate action to preserve confidence in the electoral process.

“Nothing ought to be done to give an impression that the EFCC or indeed any other agency of the Federal Government is being used to interfere with the election,” he stated.

Consequently, Tinubu directed the anti-graft agency to take immediate legal steps to vacate the court order and discontinue all proceedings relating to the freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts.

The President said the directive was issued to safeguard the integrity, credibility and fairness of Nigeria’s democratic process and to reassure citizens that federal institutions would not be perceived as instruments of political interference during elections.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, institutional independence and transparent governance, while urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles as the Osun governorship election approaches.
