President Bola Tinubu has described the life and legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a moral compass for leaders across Nigeria, urging public office holders to emulate his discipline, integrity and commitment to national service.
Tinubu made the remarks during a commemorative event held in honour of Buhari, where political leaders, diplomats and dignitaries gathered to reflect on his years in office and his contributions to governance. He said Buhari’s leadership style, anchored on accountability and personal restraint, remains a reference point in a political environment often challenged by excess and impunity.
According to the President, Buhari demonstrated uncommon dedication to public service both as a military leader and as a democratically elected president, stressing that his approach to governance placed national interest above personal gain. Tinubu noted that Buhari’s anti-corruption stance, though sometimes controversial, set a tone for transparency and fiscal discipline in government operations.
He added that beyond policies and programmes, Buhari’s personal values stood out, particularly his modest lifestyle and firm stance on issues of national importance. Tinubu urged younger leaders and those in public office to draw lessons from Buhari’s example, especially in areas of patriotism, sacrifice and ethical leadership.

The President also acknowledged the challenges faced during Buhari’s administration, including economic pressures and security concerns, but maintained that his efforts to stabilise the country and strengthen institutions should not be overlooked. He said history would judge Buhari kindly for his consistency and commitment to Nigeria’s unity.
Tinubu further called for a renewed focus on value-based leadership, arguing that the country’s development depends not only on policies but also on the character of those entrusted with power. He stressed that Nigeria must build a culture where integrity and accountability are rewarded.
In his closing remarks, Tinubu said Buhari’s legacy should inspire a new generation of leaders determined to serve with honour. He urged Nigerians to reflect on the former president’s life and recommit to the ideals of nation-building, unity and responsible governance.
