Dr. Bosun Tijani, Kalu

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has commended Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for prioritising Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State under the Federal Government’s National Universal Communications Access Programme (NUCAP).

Tijani said the intervention was part of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure that unserved and underserved communities across Nigeria are connected to reliable mobile and broadband services.

The minister made this known in Abuja on Tuesday while discussing the progress of the NUCAP intervention in Bende, where a new telecommunications tower is nearing completion along the Umuahia–Ohafia Road.

According to him, the project is being implemented in collaboration with Kalu’s office to address connectivity gaps across the constituency and expand access to the digital economy.

“Bende Local Government Area is one of the areas being prioritised under this initiative,” Tijani said, noting that Kalu had drawn the ministry’s attention to the connectivity challenges confronting communities in the area.

He disclosed that preliminary assessments showed that between five and eight additional telecommunications sites could be required to achieve strong coverage across the geographically extensive local government area.

Tijani said further technical assessments would determine the exact number and locations of additional sites while ensuring that NUCAP infrastructure complements existing commercial networks rather than duplicating them.

The minister listed Uzuakoli, Ozuitem/Nkpa, Item, Igbere, Alayi/Ugwueke and Itumbauzo/Umuhu-Ezechi among the communities being considered for priority connectivity interventions.

He said the ministry’s immediate ambition was to substantially connect the entire Bende Local Government Area before Christmas 2026.

Tijani explained that the programme was designed to deliver benefits beyond ordinary telephone and internet access, stressing that reliable connectivity would enable farmers and traders to access markets, young people to pursue digital opportunities, and schools and healthcare facilities to use online services.

He added that improved connectivity would also support businesses, financial inclusion and citizens’ access to government services.

The minister further noted that expanding telecommunications coverage would strengthen the transparency and integrity of the electoral process by supporting the deployment and operation of digital technologies, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the area as a model centre for the connectivity initiative.

He also praised the ministry under Tijani for the speed with which the programme was being implemented, saying his office would continue working with the ministry and Abia State Government to expand coverage across the constituency before the 2027 general elections.

Kalu said reliable communications infrastructure was critical to the growth of businesses and agriculture, while also playing an important role in improving electoral processes.

He assured that efforts would continue to extend the benefits of the initiative to other parts of Abia State, with the ultimate goal of ending poor network connectivity across the state.
