The Anambra State Government has introduced new regulations restricting funeral ceremonies, including a ban on midweek burials, in a bid to curb excessive spending and restore cultural values.
Under the policy, burials will now be limited to specific days, primarily weekends, while lavish displays and prolonged ceremonies are discouraged. The government said the move aims to reduce financial pressure on families and promote modest celebrations.
Officials explained that many households fall into debt due to extravagant funeral practices, which have become increasingly commercialized over the years.
The directive has generated mixed reactions among residents. While some welcomed the policy as a necessary intervention, others argued it could infringe on personal and cultural freedoms.

Community leaders and traditional rulers have been tasked with ensuring compliance, with penalties expected for violations.
Religious groups have also been urged to support the initiative by encouraging simpler burial rites.
The government emphasized that the policy is not intended to undermine traditions but to promote responsible spending and social balance.
Observers say the move could set a precedent for other states grappling with similar concerns about rising funeral costs.
