The Lagos State Government has urged residents of Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki and Epe to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) as part of efforts to protect public health.

The warning was issued by the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, in a statement highlighting the need for heightened awareness and preparedness in the affected districts.

Adeleke said Ebola Virus Disease, caused by Ebola viruses, is a severe and often fatal illness if not detected and treated promptly, stressing the importance of early reporting and strict adherence to safety measures.

She called on residents to maintain a high level of personal hygiene, avoid contact with bodily fluids of infected persons, and report any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility without delay.

According to her, symptoms of Ebola may include fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and in severe cases, bleeding, noting that early medical intervention significantly improves survival chances.

The permanent secretary also emphasised the role of community cooperation in preventing the spread of the disease, urging residents to comply with public health advisories and avoid spreading misinformation that could hinder response efforts.

She reassured residents that the Lagos State Government has strengthened its disease surveillance systems and emergency response capacity to quickly detect and contain any potential outbreak.

Health authorities, she said, are working closely with relevant agencies to monitor developments and ensure that healthcare facilities are equipped to manage suspected cases effectively.

Adeleke further advised healthcare workers to strictly observe infection prevention and control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment, to minimise the risk of transmission within medical settings.

Residents were also encouraged to avoid bush meat consumption and ensure that food is properly cooked, as part of broader preventive strategies against zoonotic diseases.

Public health experts note that vigilance remains critical, especially in densely populated areas where infectious diseases can spread rapidly if not properly contained.

The state government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the health of residents through continuous public enlightenment campaigns and strengthened healthcare interventions.

It also called on community leaders, religious organisations and other stakeholders to support awareness efforts and encourage responsible health practices among residents.

The advisory comes amid ongoing efforts to ensure that Lagos remains prepared to respond swiftly to any public health threat, with authorities stressing that prevention and early detection remain the most effective tools in combating infectious diseases like Ebola.
