The Traffic NG

Nigeria, China

Nigeria has intensified efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ITS Nigeria and the China Intelligent

Transportation Systems Association to promote smart transport technologies and knowledge exchange.

The agreement was signed in Xiamen by the Co-Founder, Vice President, and International Director of ITS Nigeria, Debo Shopade, during the 2026 China International Transportation and Safety Expo (CITSE).

Under the partnership, both organisations will focus on capacity building, technology transfer, promotion of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) adoption, and collaboration between Nigerian stakeholders and Chinese transport technology providers.

Shopade explained that Nigeria’s rapidly growing urban population and increasing traffic congestion demand modern, technology-driven solutions beyond traditional road expansion, noting that intelligent infrastructure is now essential for economic development and improved road safety.

He further described Intelligent Transportation Systems as integrated networks of sensors, cameras, data analytics, and communication tools designed to improve traffic flow, reduce accidents, and enhance overall road safety. According to him, such systems are already widely deployed in countries like China.
