Youth leaders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have declared support for former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election, while openly rejecting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a viable option for their political future.
The position was announced following a meeting of ADC youth stakeholders, where they argued that the country requires a younger, more reform-driven leadership style capable of addressing unemployment, insecurity, and economic stagnation.
Speaking after the meeting, youth representatives said Amaechi’s record in governance, infrastructure development, and political experience placed him in a better position to lead national renewal efforts.
They also stated that the group would not support Atiku Abubakar, insisting that Nigeria’s leadership transition should move beyond “recycled political figures” and focus on new direction and accountability.
According to the youth leaders, their endorsement reflects growing frustration among young voters over persistent economic hardship and lack of opportunities, especially for graduates and entrepreneurs.
They further called on the ADC leadership to prioritise credible candidates who can unify the party and improve its national competitiveness ahead of the 2027 polls.

The group maintained that internal democracy must be respected during the party’s primaries, warning against imposition or elite bargaining that could weaken grassroots participation.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, remains one of the prominent figures being considered in early political alignments ahead of the next general election cycle.
The development highlights emerging divisions and early positioning within opposition circles as parties begin to shape their strategies for what is expected to be a highly contested presidential race in 2027.
