AC Milan manager, Ruben Amorim, has opened up about his surprising decision to deploy Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze as a right wing-back this season. The Portuguese tactician insisted that the demanding new role relies much more on the player’s spirit and character than his traditional defensive qualities.

Amorim has firmly settled on a 3-4-2-1 formation for the Rossoneri and has consistently utilized Chukwueze in the wing-back position throughout pre-season. This major tactical shift is a significant departure from the player’s usual highly attacking role, which naturally raised concerns among some fans regarding his defensive capabilities and positional awareness.

Addressing these concerns during a press conference on Saturday, Amorim clarified that the Nigerian international’s relentless work rate and attitude are what matter most in his tactical setup.

“It depends on the mentality of the player. Sometimes people just look at one player because he’s really good offensively and they think he cannot defend,” Amorim explained.

“Defending is about spirit and character, which Chukwueze has. He’s improving, of course he’s not the typical defender, but we think he suits our game. He can really help us control the ball and I think he defended much better against Man Utd.”

When asked whether his current use of Chukwueze mirrored how he successfully deployed Amad Diallo during his recent managerial stint at Manchester United, Amorim emphasized that the rigid tactical demands of Italian football require a delicate balance between attacking freedom and disciplined defensive structure.

“I realise here a winger is more of a full-back in Italy, but we want to play more with the ball than without the ball. We want to defend really well, but I believe we defend well with the ball. If we don’t have the ball, it doesn’t matter if we have ten defenders, we’re going to have problems,” the manager stated.

Chukwueze, who recently returned to Milan following a highly productive loan spell in the Premier League with Fulham, is widely expected to continue operating in the right wing-back role as the new Serie A season officially begins.

The club’s technical staff are now eager to see whether the explosive forward can add further assists and dynamic wide play to his tally while mastering his new defensive responsibilities on the flank.
