Calvin Bassey

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has spoken candidly about the intense tactical challenges that made his stint at Ajax Amsterdam one of the most difficult periods of his career.

The 26-year-old also explained how returning to English football with Fulham helped him rediscover his top form.

Bassey made a high-profile move to the Dutch capital in the summer of 2022 after a phenomenal season with Scottish giants Rangers.

Ajax secured his services for a club-record £19.6 million (€23m), expecting the Nigerian international to seamlessly fill the gap left by Lisandro Martinez. However, adapting to the highly technical and heavily scrutinized Dutch system proved much tougher than expected.

Managerial instability and the unique positional demands of the Eredivisie exposed the defender early on. Public criticism from Dutch football legends Wesley Sneijder and Marco van Basten further amplified the pressure.

Reflecting on the period, Bassey admitted that the tactical gap between British football and the Dutch league was massive.

“It was the tactical aspect of understanding where you need to be and knowing where your next pass is going,” Bassey revealed. “In England, full-backs normally stay on the sideline. At Ajax, a full-back plays more like a number six in possession, or he moves as soon as you receive the ball. So if you understand it tactically and know where your next pass needs to go, it becomes easier.”

He detailed how his deeply ingrained defensive habits often clashed with Ajax’s fluid system.

“If my first touch was to the outside, which was natural for me because I expect the full-backs to be there, my passing lane was immediately blocked, because the full-back at Ajax can cut inside,” he added.

Moving back to England in 2023 to join Fulham proved to be a transformative decision. Under the guidance of manager Marco Silva, Bassey flourished in the Premier League.

He locked down a starting spot, massively improved his passing accuracy, and even won Fulham’s Player of the Season award. He recently marked his 100th appearance for the London club.

“The English league is easier for me because I am used to English football,” Bassey explained. “Many managers come from abroad, mine is Portuguese, but it is the system I am familiar with. What you do at Ajax takes time. Players who were new needed more time to adapt.

When you are young, and at that time I was 21 or 22, I might have needed another season to settle in. Just like in England. I needed a year there to settle in as well. After that, I played most of the matches and became Player of the Year at the club.”

Despite the heavy criticism he faced in the Netherlands, the defender credited the difficult experience for shaping him into a much more complete and tactically aware player.

“I feel like I understand the game more, but that is clearly due to the experience you gain,” he noted. “The only way to know you are doing something wrong is to simply do it wrong. But it is also about the mentality. You have to be willing to make mistakes so that you can improve.”
