The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has called for unity among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State ahead of Saturday’s presidential primary, warning that internal divisions could weaken the party’s chances in future elections.

Speaking to journalists on Friday upon arrival at Makurdi Airport, Akume also expressed concern over reports of diversion of electoral materials during the party’s earlier primaries in the state, describing the development as disturbing and capable of undermining confidence in the process.

He urged party stakeholders to prioritise the collective interest of the APC above personal ambitions and called on aggrieved aspirants to embrace dialogue and reconciliation. According to him, unity remains critical as the party prepares to elect its presidential candidate.

Akume, who was received by a large crowd of supporters, said he was in the state to mobilise backing for President Bola Tinubu, expressing confidence in the President’s performance and acceptance among Nigerians. He maintained that despite dissenting voices, the administration’s record and inclusive governance style would secure widespread support at the primary.

On the allegations of irregularities, the SGF called for a thorough investigation by party officials and security agencies, stressing that anyone found culpable must be held accountable. He assured party members that steps were being taken to ensure a credible and transparent process going forward.

He further appealed to supporters to remain peaceful and turn out in large numbers for the exercise, expressing optimism that the party would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the 2027 general elections.
