The Inspector-General of Police IGP, has ordered a nationwide audit of firearms and weapons under police custody, as part of efforts to strengthen control and accountability within the force.
The directive, announced in Abuja, aims to ensure proper documentation, tracking, and management of all weapons, amid concerns about misuse and illegal circulation.
Police authorities said the audit would involve a comprehensive review of records across all commands, with strict penalties for discrepancies or violations. Officers have been instructed to comply fully with the process.
The IGP emphasized that the initiative is part of broader reforms to enhance professionalism and public trust in the police. He noted that effective weapons control is essential for maintaining security and preventing crime.

Security experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step toward improving accountability. They stressed the importance of transparency and regular audits in law enforcement.
However, some observers called for independent oversight to ensure credibility. They argue that internal audits alone may not be sufficient to address systemic issues.
The police leadership assured that the audit would be thorough and transparent, with findings to be used in strengthening policies and procedures.
