Professor Olufemi Ogundipe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a reconstitution of the governing board of the National Universities Commission, appointing Professor Olufemi Ogundipe as chairman in a move aimed at strengthening oversight of Nigeria’s university system.

The announcement was made as part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to reposition tertiary education and improve standards across public and private universities. The newly constituted board is expected to provide strategic direction for the commission as it addresses challenges relating to funding, accreditation, research, and institutional development.

Professor Ogundipe, a respected academic and former vice-chancellor, brings decades of experience in university administration and educational leadership. Stakeholders within the education sector have welcomed his appointment, expressing optimism that his expertise will contribute to policy innovation and improved governance.

The restructuring comes at a time when Nigerian universities face mounting pressure to expand access to higher education while maintaining quality. Rapid enrolment growth, inadequate infrastructure, and concerns over graduate employability remain major issues confronting the sector.

Government officials said the new board will work closely with the commission’s management to ensure compliance with academic standards and support reforms designed to make Nigerian universities globally competitive. Particular emphasis is expected to be placed on research development, technology-driven learning, and stronger collaboration with industry.

Education experts have argued that effective leadership at the NUC is critical to achieving sustainable improvements in tertiary education. They note that the commission plays a central role in regulating institutions, approving academic programmes, and ensuring quality assurance.

The Federal Government also indicated that the reconstituted board would support efforts to strengthen university autonomy while promoting accountability and transparency in administration.

Students and university administrators are expected to closely monitor the board’s actions in the coming months, especially regarding accreditation exercises and policy implementation.

Analysts say the appointment reflects the administration’s recognition of education as a key driver of national development and economic competitiveness. They add that success will depend on the board’s ability to translate policy objectives into measurable outcomes.

With Professor Ogundipe now at the helm, expectations are high that the commission will accelerate reforms aimed at enhancing the quality, relevance, and global standing of Nigeria’s higher education system.
