The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a clean sweep in Edo State’s local government elections, winning all 18 chairmanship positions and the 192 councillorship seats contested in Saturday’s poll.
Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, announced the results on Sunday, confirming that the ruling party emerged victorious across all local government areas and wards where elections were conducted.
Aifuobhokhan said the exercise was carried out in line with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, 2022, as amended in 2026, as well as other relevant guidelines governing the conduct of the poll.
According to him, the processes of accreditation, voting, sorting, counting, collation and final declaration were completed without deviation from established procedures, adding that the commission ensured compliance at every stage.

“The APC has won all the chairmanship and councillorship seats contested in the election,” he stated, noting that the outcome reflected the will of voters who participated in the exercise.
The sweeping victory further strengthens the APC’s political foothold in Edo State, consolidating its control at the grassroots level and positioning it ahead of future electoral contests.
While the commission described the election as orderly, reactions from opposition parties and civil society groups were still emerging at the time of filing this report. Past local government elections in various states have often drawn criticism over transparency and competitiveness, raising expectations for stakeholders to scrutinise the process.
Observers say turnout levels, logistics and security deployment are key indicators in assessing the credibility of such elections, though official figures were yet to be released by EDSIEC.
Security agencies were reported to have been deployed across the state to maintain law and order during the poll, with no major incidents recorded in most areas.
The outcome is expected to influence political dynamics within the state, especially as parties begin early positioning ahead of future governorship and general elections.
Local government administrations play a crucial role in grassroots development, making the composition of councils a significant factor in governance and service delivery at the community level.
With the results now declared, attention is likely to shift to the inauguration of elected officials and the next phase of local governance in Edo State, as residents look forward to improved infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities under the new leadership.
