Falconets

Nigeria’s Falconets have secured their place at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The team survived a heavy scare against Malawi during their second-leg clash at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, eventually sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory to keep their perfect qualification record intact.

The Nigerian side went into the away fixture with a comfortable two-goal advantage. During the first leg played in Ikenne, an own goal by Malawian defender Maureen Kenneth and a solid strike from Kindness Ifeanyi gave the Falconets a 2-0 cushion.

Many expected a straightforward return leg, but the Young Scorchers of Malawi had a completely different plan on their home turf.

Right from the kickoff on Saturday, the Malawian team pressed hard. They broke the deadlock just nine minutes into the game when Faith Chimzimu found the back of the net, giving the home crowd a massive reason to cheer.

Nigeria tried to respond quickly when Ifeanyi sent a dangerous cross into the box, but Favour Nkwocha’s powerful header crashed heavily against the woodwork. The hosts went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead on the day.

The real panic for Nigeria started ten minutes into the second half. Chimzimu struck again, completing her brace and bringing the scoreline to 2-0.

At that exact moment, the aggregate score was tied at 2-2. Nigeria’s historic record of qualifying for every single U-20 World Cup since the tournament started in 2002 was suddenly under a genuine threat.

Realising the danger, head coach Moses Aduku turned to his bench and introduced Precious Oscar. That substitution ultimately saved the tie.

In the 62nd minute, the forward forced a Malawian defender into making a costly error, grabbed the ball, and fired it straight past the goalkeeper. That single goal restored Nigeria’s aggregate lead and completely silenced the home fans.

The Falconets defended their narrow advantage for the rest of the game to progress. They will now head to Poland in September for their 12th appearance at the global tournament.

Having finished as runners-up in Germany 2010 and Canada 2014, the team will be aiming to finally bring the trophy back to Nigeria.
