The All Progressives Congress (APC) has screened no fewer than 98 aspirants seeking to contest for seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly, setting the stage for what party officials describe as a crucial and competitive primary election.

The screening exercise, which took place amid tight security and heightened political interest, is part of the party’s preparations ahead of its primaries. It is expected to determine the APC’s flag bearers for the upcoming legislative elections in Rivers State.

Party officials disclosed that the screening committee carefully assessed the credentials, eligibility, and political track records of the aspirants to ensure that only qualified candidates emerge. The process, they noted, was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.

Speaking after the exercise, a member of the screening panel said the APC remains committed to transparency and fairness throughout the selection process. According to him, the large number of aspirants reflects growing confidence in the party’s structure and its chances in the state.

“The turnout is an indication that our party is gaining momentum in Rivers. We are focused on presenting credible candidates who can effectively represent their constituencies and contribute meaningfully to governance,” he said.

Several aspirants who participated in the screening expressed optimism about the process, describing it as thorough and well-organized. Some, however, acknowledged the stiff competition ahead, given the number of contenders vying for limited tickets.

Political observers say the screening marks a significant step for the APC as it seeks to strengthen its foothold in Rivers State’s political landscape, traditionally dominated by rival parties. Analysts believe that the outcome of the primaries will play a decisive role in shaping the party’s performance in the general elections.

The APC leadership has urged aspirants to maintain party unity and abide by the rules of engagement before, during, and after the primaries. It also warned against anti-party activities, stressing that discipline remains key to achieving electoral success.

With the screening concluded, attention now shifts to the primaries, where the aspirants will battle for the party’s tickets in what is expected to be a closely watched contest across the state’s constituencies.
