The Federal Government has fixed June 17 for the next phase of Nigeria’s nationwide digital television transition, intensifying efforts to phase out analogue broadcasting across the country.
The announcement was made by the National Broadcasting Commission during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where officials disclosed plans to accelerate the Digital Switch Over programme aimed at improving broadcast quality and expanding access to digital services.
According to the commission, the rollout will commence simultaneously in several states as part of the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to completing the migration process that has experienced multiple delays over the years.
Officials said the transition would provide Nigerians with clearer picture quality, improved sound, more television channels, and enhanced broadcasting services.
The NBC explained that the digital switch aligns with global broadcasting standards established by the International Telecommunication Union for member countries.
Government representatives stated that preparations are already ongoing with licensed signal distributors and broadcasters to ensure a smooth transition before the June deadline.
They also assured Nigerians that awareness campaigns would be intensified nationwide to educate viewers on the migration process and the use of set-top boxes required for digital reception.
Industry stakeholders at the meeting noted that full digital migration could create employment opportunities within Nigeria’s creative and technology sectors while expanding advertising revenue for broadcasters.
The Federal Government further reiterated that the switch would help free up spectrum space for telecommunications and internet expansion.
Broadcast experts believe the digital transition could significantly transform Nigeria’s media landscape by encouraging innovation and improving competition among television operators.
However, concerns remain over affordability of set-top boxes for low-income households and the readiness of some states to meet technical requirements ahead of the rollout.
The NBC assured consumers that approved decoders would remain available through accredited dealers nationwide.
Nigeria began the Digital Switch Over project several years ago but implementation has faced repeated setbacks linked to funding, logistics, and infrastructure challenges.
Despite the delays, officials expressed optimism that the latest phase would mark a major step toward full nationwide digital broadcasting.
