President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law the 2026 Appropriation Bill of ₦68.32 trillion, while also approving an extension of the 2025 budget implementation period to June 30, 2026, according to a State House statement released Friday.
The newly assented 2026 budget allocates ₦4.799 trillion for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent expenditure, and ₦32.2 trillion for capital expenditure through the Development Fund.
With nearly 50 per cent of the total budget dedicated to capital projects, the federal government says the fiscal plan prioritises infrastructure development, national security, economic stability, and inclusive growth.
The President also signed the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, effectively extending the lifespan of the 2025 capital budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026. The move is aimed at ensuring the completion of ongoing infrastructure and development projects already at advanced stages.
According to the Presidency, the extension will allow Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to consolidate ongoing works, improve project delivery rates, and maximise the impact of public spending.
The 2026 Appropriation Act, which took effect from April 1, will now be fully implemented in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
President Tinubu directed all MDAs to ensure strict adherence to transparency, discipline, and efficiency in the use of public funds, stressing the importance of value for money and timely execution of projects.
He also commended the National Assembly for what he described as its diligence and cooperation in the swift passage of the budget, highlighting the need for continued synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government.
Reaffirming his administration’s economic priorities, Tinubu assured Nigerians of ongoing efforts to deepen fiscal reforms, boost revenue generation, and channel investments into sectors capable of driving job creation and strengthening social protection systems.
