Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended the contractor handling the Kugbo Bus Terminal project, stating that recent damage to the facility was caused by a natural event rather than structural failure.
Wike made the clarification during an inspection of the site in Abuja, where sections of the terminal’s roof were affected following a heavy windstorm. He dismissed claims of poor construction, insisting that the integrity of the project remains intact.
According to the minister, preliminary assessments indicate that the damage was limited to the roofing structure, which was exposed due to the terminal’s elevated location. He noted that such positioning makes the facility more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
Wike emphasized that the contractor adhered to approved standards and specifications, adding that there is no justification for sanctions or contract termination. He assured the public that necessary repairs would be carried out promptly to restore the facility.
The minister also used the opportunity to highlight ongoing infrastructure development across the Federal Capital Territory, reiterating the administration’s commitment to delivering durable and modern public transport systems.
Industry experts have weighed in on the incident, noting that windstorms can significantly impact large structures, particularly during the construction phase when certain components may not yet be fully reinforced.
Residents and commuters, however, have expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for more rigorous quality assurance measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Wike urged patience and understanding, assuring that the government remains focused on completing the project to serve the growing transportation needs of Abuja residents.
