English Premier League club Arsenal is currently leading the race to sign Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez.
The 24-year-old Nigerian defender is attracting massive interest from top European clubs ahead of a potential summer move.
Fernandez initially struggled to secure playing time after joining Rangers from Peterborough United. He missed several matchday squads early in the season but eventually established himself as a key figure under head coach Danny Röhl. His highly consistent performances recently earned him a deserved spot in the PFA Team of the Season.
The towering 6ft 5in defender has scored six goals and won 69 percent of his defensive duels this season. This excellent form has caught the attention of Arsenal management as the club actively looks for strong defensive reinforcements.
Sports publication TEAMtalk recently provided a detailed update on the intense transfer battle surrounding the player.
“Arsenal lead the domestic pursuit, with the Gunners closely monitoring the giant defender as a potential reinforcement for their backline,” the report stated.
However, the north London club faces serious competition from other Premier League rivals who are eager to secure his signature.
“Chelsea have also shown keen interest, while West Ham United are actively linked and could make a concrete approach. Everton complete a notable Premier League contingent keeping tabs on his progress,” the report added.
The interest in the talented centre-back extends far beyond England. Top Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are heavily involved in the race, alongside teams like Ajax and Feyenoord.
“In Europe, Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have registered strong admiration, with some sources indicating they were among the earliest to show interest. Dortmund in particular are seen as strong contenders,” TEAMtalk noted.
Rangers are currently preparing for a major bidding war. The Scottish club expects to demand a substantial transfer fee because Fernandez still has three years remaining on his current contract.
“Rangers are braced for significant interest and are reportedly set to demand at least £25m, with some sources suggesting a higher valuation up to £35m, for the centre-back,” the publication revealed.
Despite the strong Arsenal transfer interest, Fernandez is expected to weigh his options very carefully.
The Gunners already have an established first-choice centre-back pairing in William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, meaning the Nigerian defender will have to fight hard for regular playing time if he makes the move to the Emirates Stadium.
