The United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as Washington and Abuja deepen their defence cooperation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to confront terrorism and other security threats.
The equipment was transported to Nigeria aboard a United States Air Force C-17 aircraft as part of an existing military partnership between both countries.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced the delivery in a post on X, describing the development as evidence of the expanding security relationship between the United States and Nigeria.
“Partnership in action,” AFRICOM said in its brief announcement, adding that the delivery was made under a foreign military sales agreement intended to advance the defence partnership between the two countries.
The delivery comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its military capabilities in response to persistent security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency and other threats affecting parts of the country and the wider West African region.

The United States has maintained security cooperation with Nigeria through military assistance, training, intelligence cooperation and other defence-related programmes, particularly in the fight against terrorist organisations operating in the Lake Chad Basin and other parts of the region.
The latest equipment transfer is expected to further support the Nigerian military’s operational requirements, although AFRICOM did not disclose the specific nature, quantity or value of the equipment delivered in its announcement.
The use of a C-17 Globemaster III, a heavy military transport aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force, underscores the logistical component of the latest transfer.
Foreign military sales arrangements allow the United States to provide defence equipment and related services to partner countries under government-to-government agreements. Such arrangements are often accompanied by training, maintenance and other forms of technical support.
For Nigeria, strengthening access to modern military equipment remains an important component of efforts to improve the capabilities of its armed forces as they confront complex and evolving security threats.
The latest delivery also reflects Washington’s broader engagement with Nigeria as one of Africa’s most strategically important countries and a key security partner in West Africa.
AFRICOM’s description of the shipment as “partnership in action” signals the continued emphasis by both countries on closer defence ties.
While details of the equipment remain undisclosed, the transfer adds to ongoing U.S.-Nigeria security cooperation and comes at a time when Abuja is seeking stronger international partnerships to enhance military effectiveness and address threats to national and regional security.
The development is expected to reinforce existing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the United States as both countries continue to work together against terrorism and other security challenges.
