First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has flagged off an empowerment programme targeting 2,500 women across the South-East, with beneficiaries set to receive business equipment and financial support to strengthen their livelihoods.

The initiative is expected to provide women with practical tools designed to help them establish or expand small businesses while improving household incomes and economic independence.

Items being distributed under the programme include freezers, gas cookers, generators and grinding machines, depending on the needs and business activities of the beneficiaries.

In addition to the equipment, the programme provides N250 million in financial support to beneficiaries across the region.

The intervention forms part of the First Lady’s broader efforts to promote women’s economic empowerment and support vulnerable households through initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

The programme is particularly significant for women operating small and medium-scale businesses, many of whom face challenges accessing affordable capital and productive equipment.

By providing both equipment and financial assistance, the initiative is designed to reduce some of the costs associated with starting or sustaining small enterprises.

Women beneficiaries are expected to use the support across a range of income-generating activities, including food processing, trading and other forms of small-scale enterprise.

The First Lady has consistently emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for women to become economically productive and contribute more significantly to the development of their families and communities.

The South-East empowerment programme also comes against the backdrop of growing calls for greater inclusion of women in Nigeria’s economic development efforts.

For many low-income women, access to basic business equipment can significantly improve production capacity and reduce operating costs.

The financial component of the programme is similarly expected to provide beneficiaries with additional working capital to support their businesses.

The intervention is aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods rather than providing temporary relief, with beneficiaries expected to deploy the resources toward activities capable of generating regular income.

The distribution across the five South-East states is also intended to broaden the reach of the initiative and ensure that women in different communities benefit from the programme.

The First Lady’s office has continued to promote interventions focused on women, children and vulnerable groups, linking empowerment to broader efforts to strengthen families and communities.

The latest programme places economic empowerment at the centre of its strategy, with the expectation that beneficiaries will use the support to improve their businesses, increase household earnings and contribute to local economic activity.
