First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on households, businesses and communities to reduce food waste and adopt more sustainable practices as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Cleanup Day 2026.

Tinubu, in a message to commemorate the day, said this year’s theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” highlights the need for environmental responsibility to begin with reducing the amount of waste generated in homes and communities.

She said the emphasis on food waste was particularly significant amid growing global challenges, including climate change and conflicts, which continue to affect food production, distribution and access.

According to her, Nigerians must become more conscious of how they purchase, prepare, consume and preserve food to reduce avoidable waste and its impact on the environment.

“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” the First Lady said.

She also urged Nigerians to view environmental cleanliness as a collective responsibility rather than an obligation limited to government agencies or environmental authorities.

Tinubu said individual actions, when adopted collectively, could contribute significantly to cleaner and healthier communities.

Her message comes as environmental sustainability and responsible waste management remain major concerns for communities across Nigeria, where improper disposal of refuse can contribute to blocked drainage systems, flooding, pollution and other public health and environmental challenges.

The First Lady emphasised the connection between responsible food consumption and broader environmental protection, urging Nigerians to minimise waste at every stage, from purchasing food to its preparation, consumption and preservation.

She said the observance of World Cleanup Day should therefore go beyond symbolic cleanup exercises to encourage lasting changes in everyday behaviour.

The theme for the 2026 observance places particular attention on food waste, encouraging individuals and organisations to consider how food choices and waste-management practices affect the wider environment.

Tinubu said cleaner surroundings would contribute to healthier communities and improve living conditions for present and future generations.

“Through our collective efforts, we can build cleaner, healthier communities for present and future generations,” she said.

World Cleanup Day provides an opportunity for communities, organisations and individuals to participate in activities aimed at improving environmental cleanliness while promoting greater awareness of responsible waste management.

For Nigeria, the First Lady’s message places emphasis on reducing waste at source, proper refuse disposal and more sustainable consumption practices as part of efforts to build cleaner communities.

She called on Nigerians to make environmental responsibility part of their daily routines, stressing that meaningful change begins with individual and collective action.

She concluded her message by wishing Nigerians a happy World Cleanup Day 2026.
