The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to safeguard the nation’s railway infrastructure from vandalism and theft.

Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

Accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Nigeria Railway Police Command, CP Lasisi Titilola, Opeifa described railway infrastructure as critical national assets that must be protected. He pledged that the Corporation would continue working closely with security agencies to ensure that individuals arrested for vandalising railway facilities are diligently prosecuted to deter others.

The NRC boss commended the Oyo State Police Command and the Nigeria Railway Police Command for their professionalism and swift action, which recently resulted in the arrest of three suspected railway vandals and the recovery of stolen railway materials valued at approximately ₦200 million.

According to him, the suspects were intercepted during an intelligence-led operation while allegedly transporting vandalised railway materials from Niger State to Lagos.

Opeifa described the operation as a significant milestone in the fight against railway vandalism, noting that it reflects the effectiveness of sustained cooperation between the NRC and security agencies in protecting public infrastructure.

He stressed that the Corporation would continue to deepen partnerships with the Police, other security agencies, state governments, host communities and relevant stakeholders to curb vandalism, theft and sabotage capable of disrupting railway services across the country.

The NRC Managing Director also appealed to Nigerians to support efforts to protect railway assets by providing credible and timely information that would help security agencies prevent criminal activities targeting rail facilities.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and sustainable rail transportation while working closely with security agencies and other stakeholders to protect the nation’s railway infrastructure,” Opeifa said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, urged the National Assembly to strengthen existing laws against the vandalism of critical national infrastructure by introducing stiffer penalties for offenders.

He warned vandals and other criminal elements to stay away from Oyo State, assuring that the Command would continue to pursue, arrest and prosecute anyone involved in the destruction or theft of public infrastructure.

Abimbola further disclosed that the three suspects arrested, along with the recovered railway materials, would be handed over to the Nigeria Railway Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
