More than 1,100 Islamic clerics in Katsina State have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027, pledging to mobilise support for his second-term bid across their communities.

The clerics, drawn from different Islamic groups, announced their position at a gathering in Katsina on Sunday, October 25, during an event attended by Kabiru Masari, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters.

According to reports, the participants included members of the Qadiriyya and Tijaniyya Sufi orders, the Izala movement, as well as male, female and youth Islamic scholars.

The endorsement adds to political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election, as political parties and their supporters seek to strengthen grassroots networks and build support across different communities.

The event’s convener, Dr Aminu Usman, popularly known as Abu Ammar, a former head of the Katsina State Hisbah Board, said the clerics had deliberated before deciding to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He said the group was committed to backing the President in the forthcoming election and would communicate its position to followers within their respective communities.

Masari, who represented the President’s political interests at the gathering, reportedly encouraged the clerics to explain their decision to their congregations and mobilise support for Tinubu.

The number of clerics involved was reported differently by some media outlets, with figures ranging from 1,117 to 1,121. The precise attendance figure therefore requires confirmation from the organisers.

The endorsement comes as political discussions over the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum. Tinubu, who won the 2023 presidential election as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, is expected to face political competition as parties prepare for the next electoral cycle.

Katsina, a state in Nigeria’s North-West geopolitical zone, is politically significant because of its large electorate and its place in the wider contest for support across northern Nigeria.

However, the endorsement by the clerics represents the position of the participating group and does not establish the voting intentions of the wider population of Katsina State.

The extent to which the pledge translates into electoral support will depend on subsequent mobilisation, political developments and voters’ individual decisions.

The development highlights the continuing role of religious and community networks in political engagement, particularly in grassroots outreach ahead of national elections.
