Vice President Kashim Shettima has said President Bola Tinubu chose reconciliation after the 2023 presidential election despite opposition from several northern governors during the contest.

Shettima made the disclosure on Wednesday in Ilorin, Kwara State, while speaking at the turbaning of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

Speaking against the backdrop of political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Vice President urged politicians to avoid allowing electoral disagreements to develop into permanent divisions.

He said political contests were temporary and should not destroy relationships among individuals, political groups and communities.

Shettima recalled the political challenges Tinubu faced during the 2023 presidential campaign, particularly his limited support among governors in the northern part of the country.

According to him, only six of the 19 northern states had governors who supported Tinubu’s presidential ambition at the time.

“You all know that we have 19 states in the North; out of these, only six actually believed and supported Tinubu, but Tinubu refused to be deterred,” Shettima said.

He also referred to political narratives surrounding former President Muhammadu Buhari’s position on Tinubu’s succession bid, including the slogan “Baba bayan sushi”, which he said was used by some political actors.

Despite the opposition, Shettima said Tinubu remained focused on his presidential ambition and eventually won the 2023 election.

The Vice President said the President subsequently reached out to politicians who had opposed him, describing the decision to forgive and reconcile with them as an example of leadership.

“After the 2023 election, President Tinubu hugged and forgave all other northern governors that did not support him,” he said.

Shettima therefore encouraged politicians in Kwara and across Nigeria to emulate what he described as Tinubu’s willingness to move beyond political disagreements after elections.

He urged political actors to conduct their campaigns without bitterness and to recognise that political differences should not become lasting personal conflicts.

The Vice President’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and politicians beginning to position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
