Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe says some communities that previously spent months without electricity are now receiving as much as 18 hours of power supply daily.

Tegbe disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while speaking at the commissioning of a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja.

The minister said consumers in some parts of the country had reported noticeable improvements in electricity supply following ongoing interventions across the power sector.

According to him, areas that previously experienced prolonged outages have started recording significantly longer periods of supply.

“Places that didn’t have light at all for three months are now having 18 hours light,” Tegbe said, recounting feedback from electricity consumers.

He added that some consumers had jokingly asked him to “slow down” because their freezers were now operating continuously.

Tegbe’s comments highlight the government’s ongoing efforts to improve electricity availability through interventions targeting generation, transmission and distribution.

The power sector has continued to face challenges including inadequate generation capacity, transmission limitations, distribution losses and infrastructure constraints.

The minister said the reported improvements represented progress in the government’s efforts to provide more reliable electricity to consumers.

He had previously indicated during his Senate screening that Nigerians would begin to see improvements in electricity supply within three to six months.

The commissioning of the solar hybrid project at Yakubu Gowon University also reflects the growing emphasis on alternative energy sources as part of efforts to strengthen electricity availability.

Solar hybrid systems can provide electricity independently of the national grid while also supporting existing grid supply, particularly for institutions and communities with unreliable power.

Tegbe’s latest disclosure, however, relates to selected areas and does not indicate that the reported 18-hour supply has been achieved nationwide.

Electricity availability continues to vary significantly across distribution networks and individual locations.

The Federal Government has been pursuing measures aimed at improving sector performance and increasing the reliability of electricity supplied to households, businesses and public institutions.

For consumers, longer periods of supply could reduce dependence on diesel and petrol-powered generators and potentially lower energy costs for households and businesses.

The minister said feedback from consumers would remain important as authorities continue efforts to improve power supply across the country.
