Semi Ajayi

Nigerian international Semi Ajayi has officially ended his six-year wait for Premier League football.

Hull City secured their return to the English top flight after a tense 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The decisive moment of the match came deep into the fifth minute of stoppage time. Striker Oli McBurnie buried a loose ball from six yards out after Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn fumbled a dangerous cross from Yu Hirakawa.

The 32-year-old Super Eagles defender, who currently holds 54 caps for Nigeria, joined Hull City on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion last summer.

Starting at the heart of the defense alongside John Egan, Ajayi helped maintain a remarkably solid backline throughout the highly dramatic afternoon.

His vital defensive contributions fully vindicated his decision to move to the Tigers, officially ending the club’s nine-year absence from the Premier League.

The play-off final itself took place under highly unusual circumstances. Middlesbrough was originally knocked out in the semi-finals by Southampton.

However, the south-coast club was shockingly expelled from the play-offs after admitting to illegally filming opponents’ training sessions, including those of Middlesbrough.

Following an independent commission’s ruling that the spying was directly authorized by the manager, Southampton also received a four-point deduction for the upcoming season, paving the way for Middlesbrough’s immediate reinstatement into the final.

Under the guidance of manager Jakirovic, Hull City reached the Wembley showpiece by successfully navigating past Millwall in the semi-finals, following up a goalless first leg with a 2-0 victory at The Den.

They carried that exact defensive solidity into the final, holding firm against Middlesbrough’s attacks until McBurnie’s dramatic late winner sealed their historic promotion.
