The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Oyo State Government of unlawfully removing a campaign billboard belonging to its governorship candidate, Chief Adegboyega Adegoke, describing the action as politically motivated and an attempt to weaken the party’s growing support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Adegoke’s media office.

According to the ADC candidate, the billboard, located at Idi-Ape Junction in Ibadan, was removed by agents of the state government without any prior notice or legal justification.

Adegoke said the billboard displayed his photograph alongside that of the party’s presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, before it was allegedly taken down and replaced with another banner bearing the images of Governor Seyi Makinde, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate and the party’s governorship candidate in Oyo State, Mr. Bimbo Adekambi.

He described the development as an abuse of power and a violation of the rights of opposition political parties to campaign freely in a democratic society.

According to him, no government should deploy state authority or public institutions to suppress legitimate political activities or deny opposition parties equal opportunities to reach voters.

Adegoke argued that the alleged removal of the campaign billboard reflected growing concern within the ruling administration over the increasing acceptance of the ADC and its candidates among residents of the state.

He maintained that the action would neither intimidate the party nor diminish public support for its governorship and presidential candidates.

“Such illegal act will not be tolerated and it cannot diminish the growing popularity of Oloye Adegoke and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in Ibadan and the entire Oyo State,” he said.

The ADC governorship candidate urged relevant authorities to ensure a level playing field for all political parties, stressing that respect for democratic principles, freedom of expression and political participation remains essential to credible elections.

He also called on supporters of the party to remain peaceful and focused, assuring them that the ADC would continue to pursue its campaign through lawful means despite what he described as acts of intimidation.

The allegation comes as political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties stepping up consultations, grassroots mobilisation and public engagement across the country.

The Oyo State Government had not responded to the allegation as of the time of filing this report.
