President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation Council, describing it as a strong global endorsement of Nigeria’s leadership in customs administration.

Adeniyi secured the renewed mandate during the 147th and 148th Council Sessions of the World Customs Organisation held in Brussels, further cementing Nigeria’s presence in international trade governance and customs policy coordination.

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the re-election reflects confidence in Adeniyi’s leadership capacity and the ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service. Tinubu noted that the decision by the global customs community aligns with his administration’s earlier move to extend Adeniyi’s tenure as Comptroller-General.

According to the President, the tenure extension was based on the need to sustain the momentum of reforms aimed at modernising customs operations, strengthening institutional efficiency, and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.

Tinubu highlighted key achievements recorded under Adeniyi’s leadership, including improved revenue generation, enhanced trade facilitation, and strengthened anti-smuggling operations. He also pointed to advancements in border management, stakeholder engagement, and the deployment of technology-driven solutions that have repositioned the Service.

The President gave particular commendation to the introduction of B’Odogwu, Nigeria’s indigenous customs clearance platform, describing it as a major step towards reducing dependence on foreign systems. He said the platform has simplified cargo clearance processes, improved transparency, and boosted operational efficiency, while supporting the Federal Government’s broader goal of building a technology-driven economy.

Further reforms cited by Tinubu include the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator Programme, the expansion of non-intrusive inspection systems, and improved collaboration with other government agencies. He noted that these initiatives have aligned the Nigeria Customs Service more closely with international best practices and standards.

The President stated that Adeniyi’s re-election is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration. He added that the recognition underscores the country’s commitment to facilitating legitimate trade while maintaining strong border security.

Tinubu expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s second term as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation Council would deepen international cooperation, promote efficient and secure global trade, and further enhance Nigeria’s reputation on the global stage.

He also wished the Customs boss continued success, wisdom, and strength in managing both his international responsibilities and ongoing domestic reforms within the Service.

The World Customs Organisation Council is the highest decision-making body in global customs administration, bringing together heads of customs from member countries to shape policies that guide international trade and border management systems.

Adeniyi’s re-election places Nigeria in a strategic position to influence key decisions affecting global trade flows, customs standards, and cross-border cooperation at a time when nations are increasingly prioritising efficiency, transparency, and security in trade processes.
