The Federal Government has clarified that cryptocurrency transactions are subject to existing tax regulations, insisting that digital asset investments do not exempt individuals or businesses from their tax obligations.

The clarification followed growing public interest in cryptocurrency trading and concerns over the taxation of digital assets in Nigeria.

Government officials explained that profits derived from cryptocurrency trading may attract applicable taxes depending on the nature of the transaction and the status of the taxpayer.

They noted that individuals and corporate organisations engaged in digital asset activities are expected to maintain accurate financial records and comply with relevant tax laws.

According to the government, the clarification aims to improve transparency rather than discourage innovation within Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

Officials said taxation of cryptocurrency aligns with global efforts to regulate digital financial activities while preventing tax evasion and illicit financial flows.

The government encouraged taxpayers to seek professional advice where necessary to ensure compliance with applicable tax obligations.

Financial experts welcomed the clarification, saying greater regulatory certainty could improve investor confidence and encourage responsible participation in the digital asset market.

They stressed that a clear tax framework would also support government revenue generation while promoting accountability.

Industry stakeholders, however, urged authorities to continue engaging fintech companies, blockchain developers and cryptocurrency exchanges to ensure that regulations encourage innovation without creating unnecessary compliance burdens.
