Media personality and entrepreneur Sophia Momodu has initiated legal action against reality television star Caroline Hutchings over an alleged defamatory post on Snapchat, demanding a public apology, retraction and ₦10 billion in damages for what she described as reputational harm and emotional distress.

In a legal notice issued through her lawyers, Momodu accused Hutchings of publishing a social media post that allegedly triggered widespread online speculation linking the remarks to her, thereby damaging her reputation.

According to the notice, the publication generated intense reactions across social media platforms, with many users allegedly identifying Momodu as the subject of the post despite her not being mentioned by name.

Her legal team maintained that before resorting to legal action, Momodu had reached out to Hutchings and requested a public clarification confirming that the Snapchat post was not directed at her.

The lawyers, however, stated that Hutchings neither responded to the request nor issued any clarification, allowing the speculation to continue and, according to the notice, causing further reputational damage.

Momodu’s legal representatives argued that the alleged failure to address the growing public perception exposed their client to ridicule, embarrassment and emotional distress.

As part of the demands contained in the pre-action notice, Hutchings was asked to immediately retract the publication and issue an unreserved public apology through the same channels where the alleged defamatory content circulated.

The notice also demanded the payment of ₦10 billion as compensation for the alleged injury to Momodu’s reputation, emotional suffering and other damages arising from the incident.

According to the legal team, the requested apology should expressly acknowledge that the publication and the circumstances surrounding it had caused significant harm to their client’s public image.

The lawyers further warned that failure to comply with the demands within the stipulated period would leave Momodu with no option but to institute legal proceedings to seek redress.

They maintained that court action would be pursued if Hutchings failed to issue the requested clarification, apology and compensation within the deadline outlined in the notice.

The dispute marks the latest in a series of legal confrontations involving Nigerian celebrities over social media publications, highlighting the increasing resort to defamation laws to challenge statements perceived to be damaging to personal and professional reputations.

Neither Hutchings nor her representatives had publicly responded to the legal notice at the time the action became public.

The development has attracted widespread attention online, with fans and followers closely watching whether the matter will be resolved through an out-of-court settlement or proceed to litigation.

If the demands are not met within the specified timeframe, the case is expected to move before the courts, where the parties will have the opportunity to present their claims and defences.
