Boat operators under the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON) have raised concerns over the shortage of life jackets for passengers and crew using the nation’s inland waterways.

The operators made the complaint during a visit to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Abuja Area/Liaison Office, where they also congratulated the Acting Managing Director of the authority, Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, and the Area Manager, Mrs Aisha Eri, on their recent appointments.

Speaking on behalf of the association, its National President, Dr Gani Tarzan Balogun, commended NIWA for its support to water transport operators and its efforts to improve waterways safety, particularly in the South-West.

Balogun, however, identified the inadequate availability of life jackets as one of the major challenges confronting boat operators.

He urged NIWA to prioritise the provision of adequate safety equipment, stressing that life jackets remained critical to protecting passengers and crew in the event of accidents on the waterways.

The ATBOWATON president also called for greater attention to the development and navigability of inland waterways, saying an efficient water transportation system could help reduce pressure on Nigeria’s increasingly congested roads.

According to him, improved waterways would provide commuters and cargo operators with an alternative means of transportation that could be safer and more efficient.

Responding, NIWA’s Acting Managing Director, Girei, thanked the association for the visit and assured the operators that the authority had already commenced work on several of the issues raised.

He said interventions were underway to address concerns affecting water transport operations.

The NIWA Abuja Area/Liaison Office Area Manager, Mrs Aisha Eri, also welcomed the operators and encouraged members of ATBOWATON to deploy their experience and expertise toward strengthening water transportation in the Federal Capital Territory.

She expressed optimism that closer collaboration between the association and NIWA would contribute to the development of safer and more efficient inland water transportation in the FCT.
