Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday visited former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, in Abuja in what is being described as a post-primary reconciliation move.

The visit comes a day after Atiku emerged winner of the ADC presidential primary, where he defeated Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in a closely contested race that has continued to generate political reactions within the opposition coalition.

Atiku arrived at Amaechi’s residence in the company of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and other senior party figures. The meeting was held behind closed doors, and details of the discussions were not disclosed.

However, political observers say the engagement is aimed at strengthening internal unity within the ADC and preventing post-primary tensions from weakening the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 general election.

Both Atiku and Amaechi had been leading contenders in the primary, which produced a competitive outcome and exposed underlying divisions within the party’s emerging coalition structure.

The reconciliation visit is also seen as part of broader efforts by the ADC leadership to consolidate support across key blocs following a tightly fought nomination process.

The ADC has positioned itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections, attracting several high-profile politicians in recent months as part of efforts to challenge the ruling party’s dominance
