What began as a joyous celebration of Paris Saint-Germain’s PSG Champions League victory over Arsenal quickly devolved into widespread violence across France.
The overnight chaos resulted in more than 400 arrests, injuries to multiple police officers, and significant property damage.
Thousands of fans initially took to the streets in a peaceful display of triumph, and flooded the iconic Champs-Élysées and the area around the Parc des Princes stadium.
However, the atmosphere shifted as segments of the crowd initiated clashes with security forces under a sky lit by fireworks and flares.

French authorities reported a total of 416 arrests nationwide, with 280 suspects detained in Paris alone.
During the unrest, rioters set vehicles ablaze, vandalized shopfronts, and damaged public facilities.
Seven police officers sustained injuries while they attempted to restore order. To regain control, authorities eventually deployed tear gas to disperse the aggressive crowds in central Paris.
The violence drew immediate and sharp criticism from political figures. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez publicly condemned the riots, and labeled the destruction and attacks on police as “absolutely unacceptable.”
Far-right politician, Marine Le Pen, utilized the social media platform X to question the recurring disorder that shadows French football victories.
“Only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots. Only in France does everyone feel compelled to lock themselves in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid being confronted with violence,” he said.
Saturday’s violence resurrects grim memories from just a year ago. During PSG’s previous European title celebrations, similar deadly incidents claimed two lives, including that of a 17-year-old boy.
Despite the severe overnight disturbances, PSG’s official victory itinerary remains intact. The players will proceed with a scheduled parade near the Eiffel Tower on Sunday before they attend a formal celebratory reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
