President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has secured the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election, formally unveiling Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate, in a move that signals continuity within the ruling party.

The announcement came at the APC national convention in Abuja, where party delegates endorsed Tinubu through a consensus arrangement backed by key stakeholders, governors and party leaders. The development effectively positions the Tinubu-Shettima ticket as the party’s flagbearer ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive election cycle.

Party officials said the decision to retain Shettima reflects confidence in the current administration’s policy direction and leadership structure. The vice president, a former governor of Borno State, has played a central role in economic coordination and security consultations since assuming office.

In his acceptance speech, Tinubu thanked party members for their trust and pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms in the economy, infrastructure and security. He said the administration remains focused on stabilising the economy, improving revenue generation and strengthening national unity.

Tinubu also highlighted achievements recorded under his leadership, including ongoing infrastructure projects, reforms in the oil and gas sector, and efforts to address insecurity. He assured Nigerians that the next phase of governance would deepen these gains while addressing emerging challenges.

The APC leadership described the convention as peaceful and well-organised, noting that the consensus approach was adopted to maintain party cohesion and avoid internal divisions. However, some political observers say the move could still face resistance from aspirants who had expressed interest in contesting the ticket.

Across party lines, reactions have begun to emerge, with opposition figures criticising the process and calling for a more competitive primary. Analysts say the early emergence of a candidate may give the APC a strategic advantage in campaign planning.

Political campaigns are expected to intensify in the coming months as parties finalise their candidates and outline their policy agendas. For now, Tinubu’s emergence sets the tone for the 2027 race, with attention shifting to how opposition parties will respond.
