The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a cache of stolen luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and a Lamborghini, smuggled into Lagos from Canada in what officials describe as a major breakthrough against transnational auto theft.

Customs officers, acting on intelligence and in collaboration with international partners, traced the high-end vehicles to a shipment that arrived through one of Lagos ports. A detailed inspection revealed that the cars had been reported stolen abroad before being illegally exported to Nigeria.

According to Customs authorities, the smugglers attempted to disguise the identities of the vehicles by altering documentation and tampering with identification numbers. However, enhanced surveillance systems and closer cooperation with foreign law enforcement agencies exposed the irregularities, leading to the seizure.

Officials said the recovery highlights the growing sophistication of global car theft syndicates that target luxury brands and move them across continents for resale in emerging markets. They noted that Nigeria has increasingly become a destination for such operations due to high demand for exotic vehicles.

A senior Customs officer involved in the operation said the seizure underscores the agency’s renewed commitment to tightening border controls and tackling illicit trade. He added that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend individuals connected to the smuggling network within and outside the country.

The Nigeria Customs Service also warned car dealers and prospective buyers to exercise due diligence when purchasing imported vehicles, urging them to verify documentation and ensure proper clearance through legal channels. The agency stressed that anyone found in possession of stolen vehicles risks prosecution under Nigerian law.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a strong signal that authorities are stepping up enforcement against criminal networks exploiting the auto import system. Security analysts say the success of the operation could strengthen Nigeria’s international reputation in combating organized crime.

Customs authorities confirmed that the recovered vehicles will be handed over to the appropriate authorities as investigations continue, with efforts underway to return them to their rightful owners.

The seizure marks one of the most high-profile recoveries of stolen luxury cars in recent times and reinforces the importance of cross-border intelligence sharing in curbing modern smuggling operations.
