Three abducted students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, have been rescued by security operatives following a fierce gun battle with suspected kidnappers, while seven other kidnapped travellers regained their freedom in a separate rescue operation along a highway in Plateau State.

The rescue of the AAU students was carried out by a joint security team in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State after intelligence led operatives to the kidnappers’ hideout in a nearby forest.

During the operation, one suspected kidnapper was killed and another arrested, while other members of the gang fled into the bush, abandoning their captives.

Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, identified the rescued students as 21-year-old Favour Okoroje, 19-year-old Balogun Precious and Praise Obagbalu.

According to the police, the students were abducted on July 12 from their residence at Ujemen G.T. Extension in Ekpoma before being taken into the forest by their assailants.

Ikoedem said security operatives launched a coordinated operation after receiving intelligence on the abduction and traced the gang to its hideout on July 14.

She disclosed that the suspects opened fire on the advancing security team, prompting a gun duel that resulted in the death of one kidnapper and the arrest of another.

The rescued students were safely evacuated from the scene, while security personnel immediately commenced a manhunt for the fleeing gang members.

The police also confirmed that a 300-level AAU student, Peter Ekpen Adolor, was killed during the initial attack on the students’ residence.

According to Ikoedem, the 24-year-old student was shot while attempting to open the gate when the armed kidnappers stormed the building on the night of the abduction.

She said investigations into the incident were ongoing and assured residents that security agencies would intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.

In a related development, security operatives rescued seven travellers who had been abducted along a highway in Plateau State. Although authorities have yet to release details of the operation, the successful rescue adds to recent security efforts aimed at curbing kidnapping and violent crimes across the country.

The latest operations underscore the continued collaboration among security agencies in tackling kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes, even as authorities urge members of the public to provide timely information that could aid ongoing investigations and the arrest of fleeing suspects.
