The Lagos State Waterways Authority LASWA, in partnership with Interferry, has commenced the practical phase of the Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP), marking a significant step toward improving safety standards and technical capacity in Nigeria’s inland waterways sector.
The first in-person training session of the programme was held on June 9, 2026, at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos, bringing together 50 participants for intensive practical learning.
The session was coordinated by Ukeme Sunday and focused on ferry design and construction, vessel safety standards, maintenance procedures, and operational best practices within the maritime industry.

A major highlight of the training was a hands-on technical session led by Mohammed Ibrahim, who shared more than 40 years of experience in ferry design and construction. Participants gained practical insights into vessel construction standards, maintenance requirements, and key safety considerations essential for ferry operations.
Speaking on the initiative, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel said the practical component complements the programme’s virtual mentoring and self-paced learning modules.
He explained that exposing participants to real-world operational environments and industry best practices is crucial for developing the skills needed to enhance safety and efficiency across the waterways sector.
LASWA also acknowledged the support of Interferry for sponsoring the programme, Caverton Marine for hosting the inaugural practical session, and the Lagos State Government for its continued investment in maritime safety, capacity development, and the growth of the blue economy.
The 18-month Ferry Safety Development Programme, described as Africa’s first of its kind, is designed to strengthen technical competence, encourage operational excellence, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the ferry and inland waterways industry.
