Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo Onyema, has said Nigeria’s renewed focus on tourism promotion will attract international visitors and significantly boost foreign exchange earnings.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on tourism and aviation in Lagos, Onyema noted that Nigeria possesses vast cultural heritage, natural attractions and entertainment assets capable of positioning the country as a global tourism destination.
He explained that the government is working to align aviation policies with tourism development, ensuring easier access for international travelers through improved airport infrastructure and streamlined visa processes.
According to Onyema, increased air connectivity will play a crucial role in driving tourist inflow, while partnerships with airlines and private investors will support the growth of the sector. He added that efforts are underway to modernise key airports to meet global standards.

He stressed that tourism has the potential to diversify Nigeria’s economy, reduce dependence on oil revenue and create employment opportunities across multiple sectors, including hospitality, transportation and creative industries.
The minister also highlighted ongoing collaborations with state governments to develop tourist sites and improve local infrastructure. He said each region has unique attractions that can be marketed to different segments of the global market.
Onyema called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors, noting that sustainable tourism development requires investment, innovation and effective marketing strategies. He urged stakeholders to leverage digital platforms to promote Nigeria’s image internationally.
He further emphasised the need to address security concerns and improve the overall travel experience, stating that safety remains a key consideration for international tourists. He assured that the government is taking steps to enhance security around major tourist destinations.
The minister expressed confidence that with the right policies and investments, Nigeria can become a leading tourism hub in Africa. He said the expected increase in visitor numbers will not only generate foreign exchange but also strengthen cultural exchange and global visibility.
