First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger protection, inclusion and access to healthcare for persons living with albinism in the country.

In a message to mark the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day on Saturday, June 13, the First Lady urged Nigerians to raise awareness on the rights, dignity and wellbeing of persons with albinism, noting that they continue to face discrimination and health-related challenges.

This year’s theme, “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives,” highlights the need for improved access to essential healthcare services, including sunscreen, protective clothing, regular skin screening and treatment for skin cancer, which persons with albinism are highly vulnerable to due to prolonged sun exposure.

Senator Tinubu expressed concern that stigma and lack of adequate support still limit opportunities and quality of life for many persons living with albinism across the country.

She called on government institutions, health agencies, civil society organisations and communities to intensify efforts toward inclusion and protection of their rights.

According to her, building an inclusive society requires collective responsibility to ensure that every individual is treated with fairness, love, respect and equal opportunity, regardless of physical condition.

The First Lady stressed the importance of strengthening healthcare systems to provide specialised support for persons with albinism, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to treatment and awareness remains limited.

She also urged Nigerians to challenge stereotypes and discrimination, adding that awareness and education remain key tools in promoting acceptance and dignity.

Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for vulnerable groups and supporting initiatives that promote social inclusion and improved healthcare access nationwide.

She wished persons living with albinism a happy International Albinism Awareness Day 2026.
