Two people were killed and seven others injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday morning, causing a major traffic gridlock that left thousands of commuters stranded for hours.

The accident occurred near the Kara Bridge axis of the highway and involved a commercial bus, a fuel tanker and two private vehicles, according to emergency responders.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two occupants of one of the vehicles died at the scene.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while rescue workers evacuated the bodies of the deceased to a morgue.

Eyewitnesses said the crash happened during the morning rush hour when one of the vehicles reportedly lost control and rammed into other road users.

“The impact was very loud. Before people knew what was happening, vehicles had already collided and traffic immediately built up,” said a motorist who witnessed the incident.

The accident resulted in severe traffic congestion stretching several kilometres along the expressway, forcing some commuters to abandon their journeys and seek alternative routes.

FRSC officials, supported by other emergency agencies, worked for hours to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.

A preliminary investigation by road safety officials indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving may have contributed to the crash.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, serving as a major link between Lagos and several states in the South-West and other parts of the country.

Road safety experts have repeatedly expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents recorded on the corridor, particularly involving commercial vehicles and tankers.

Residents and motorists have called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved road signage and increased patrol presence to reduce accidents.

One commuter, who spent nearly three hours in traffic, urged authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns on road safety.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to promoting safer road use and advised motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and distracted driving.

As investigations continue, authorities urged road users to remain cautious and obey traffic rules to prevent similar tragedies.

The latest accident adds to growing concerns over road safety across the country, where crashes continue to claim lives despite ongoing efforts by regulatory agencies.
